HOME TEAM DEFEATS I WHAKATANE. J I In a fast and open game on the J local grounds yesterday afternoon, Te Puke defeated Whakatano by narrow margin of two points, the final score in Te Puke's favour being 17 to 15. Neither side fielded u s strongest team. A further attack was well held up by Wihapi, play returning to midfield, where Haslam secured and dummied his way through to the Whakatano 25 line. Farmer made a useful run, hut lost possession and Wickliffe carried on the attack, but was held up near ■ Whakatane’s goal line. Trainor secured from a scrum near the line and cleared well, play returning to midfield, where a freekick to Wliaka'aue gave them a further advantage, play centreing inside the Te Puke 25 line. Whakatane pressed and locked like scoring, but McKenzie seemed possession and returned play to midfield, where Whiteside follo wed up fast and caught the Whakatane ioil-back in possession. From a scum Whakatane again pressed down to the Te Puke 25 line, hat McNaughton cleared. Parmer cat riod play into Whakatane territory, and pa&std to McKenzie, but tue latter was pulled down near the Whakatane 25 line. The Te Puke forwards, with Webster and Joyce in the van, carried on the attack, but Trainor cleared well. Oswald fol-’ lowed up the advantage as play returned to Tc Puke territory, and secured inside the Te Puke 25 line to go over for his second try. A difficult kick missed; Whakatane, 6; Te Puke, 3. Te Puke then had Whakatane on the defensive, a good run by Haslam taking play into their territory. McKenzie secured and was run out. From the line-out, Te Puke secured and the back line attacked well, the ball passing from Haslam to Farmer and McNaughton. The latter passed infield to Farmer, who crossed the line to score well out. The kick at goal missed: Whakatane,. 6; Te Puke, 6. Again Te Puke backs attacked and carried play Into the Whakatane half, Farmer passing to ’ McNaughton, who centred for the forwards to come up well, Kia Webster securing and going over for a good try. McNaughton converted with a good kick; Te Puke, 11;’ Whakatane, (5. Half-time was called shortly after, with Whakatane pressing in Te Puke territory.

After half-time,, Ahomiro was pot in the full-back position, Farmer joining Haslam in the five-eighth line, with Wihapi centre. Whakatane attacked, but Ahomiro cleared with a good kick. The Te Puke forwards followed up the advantage, and soon had Whakatane well on the defensive. Joyce secured near the 25 line and ran strongly for the Whakatane goal-line, where he transferred to Wickliffe for the latter to score, near the posts. McNaughton ■ missed an easy kick: Te Puke, 14; Whakatane, 6. The reverse set the Whakatane men going, and Te Puke were for some time defending in ‘ their own half. A free kick to ‘ Whakatane outside the Te Puke 26 line was taken by Dodd,, who put'; over a good kick; Te Puke, 14; Whakatane, 9. Whakatane still kept up the pressure, and Ahomiro was', obliged to force. Whakatane forwards carried play back from mid- '■ field to the Te Puke 25 line, where the Whakatane backs attacked well, Trainor securing and crossing the line well out. The kick at goal missed; Te Puke, 14; Whakatane, 12. Open play then alternated from one end of the field to the other, but finally settled in Te Pifke territory. From a scrum near the line, Nuku se- ‘ cured and slipped through the opposition hacks, but was held up on the - line. From a further scrum the ■ Whakatane backs again secured, and Nuku scored well out. The try was unconverted; Whakatane, 15; .Te Puke, 14. Whakatane endeavoured, to increase their lead, and attacked inside Te Puke's 25 line, but a free kick relieved the pressure. The Te Puke forwards carried play into Whakatane territory, where Arthur secured and passed to Haslam, who combined with McKenzie in an attacking movement which looked Uko resulting in a score, hut McKenzie was pushed out. The forwards kept up the pressure, and Kingi obtained possession in the loose, crossing the line and putting Te Puke in the lead again. The kick at goal missed: TePuke, 17; Whakatane, 15. Further determined attacks were made by both sides, but Te Puke managed to maintain their lead, and the game ended with the score unchanged. Mr C. Montgomery controlled the game. -.
