The three-quarter line worked well together, with Tassell - < ttinr in some good determined runs, and Renata saving invasion on several occasions by sound tackling, mg passes were at times erratic, rrav’s play was well up to standard, hig 'anticipation being particularly useful on occasions when his side was being closely pressed. MacPherjon justified his inclusion, and with Bidois put in much useful work as five-eighths and later when he moved up to half. The visiting forwards proved a B!ie fiil hard-working pack, having tlie best of the exchanges in the scrams and on the line out, hut the Tauranga pack showed to better advantage in the loose. Both Murray and Connolly in the visitors’ threequarter line have a good turn of speed which makes them particularly useful on attack, and, ar was proved on Saturday, very handy when an ‘opponent gets well away and looks like scoring. = The teams lined out as follows: Tauranga. — Full-back, 11. Raymint; three-quarters, L. Renata, R. Gray (captain), A. Tassell; fiveeighths, J. Bidois, D. MacPherson: half, C. Motutere; forwards, I. Tangili), D. Fitzpatrick, D. Cameron, P. Bidois, E. Heke, M. Cullimorc, Day, Olsen, Partridge, B. Harawira, Kaiwhata, Broderick. The Play. Whakatane won the toss and defended the northern goal, Gray setting the game going for Tauranga. The game had hardly begun when the ball came across to Tassell, who finding himself blocked on the wing, hesitated, cut infield, worked himself into a good position, and then sent the ball across to Gray, who had come round on the wing, to ' open the scoring with a good try. Hayment converted. From the kickoat J, Bidois sent the ball back to Murray, who put in a good run, but was well taken when looking dangerous. Off-side play by C. Cameron gave Whakatane a chance, but F. Harawira’s kick failed. Following loose play Renata got in a nice run, but Murray slopped him close up. The ball came back to Tassell, who centred nicely for Tangitu to grab the ball from the ensuing scramble and score, Rayment again converting —Tauranga 10. Whakatone nil. • From a scrum in midfield Motutere got his backs away, Tassell finishing ap the movement with a good run. Whakatane forwards, in a good combined movement, transferred play to Tauranga territory j Rayment being Aaught In possession,, but Tauranga forwards came ; round quickly, worked the ball back, and placed Whakatane on the defence. Trainor, from a scrum, got Murray away, but Renala took him nicely. ’ At this stage Whakatane was getting the best of the scrums, but the passing lacked B aap, enabling the Tauranga backs 1° spoil several movements. Rhodes got off-side on a line-out, giving another chance to open tbelr score, but B. Harawira’s kick useless. Maintaining, the pressite Whakatane had Tauranga in difficulties, when, mulling the ball, » Tauranga forward got off-side in Rout of the goal, F. Harawira misshg an easy kick, and Tauranga •orcing. Harawira, who centred, hut the ball went over the line and Gray was able to force. The drop-out was brought back for a scrum, a Tauranga man being in front, and from the scrum the Cameron brothers came away with a great rush. MacPherson picked up smartly and got his backs moving, Renata slipping and going out when almost over. From the throwin Rhodes collected the ball and touched down, C. Cameron’s kick going wide. Tauranga 16, Whakatane 5. The kick-off had Tauranga strenuously defending, a determined Whakatane attack being brilliantly stopped by Gear, who immediately afterwards was compelled to force. An exchange of kicks gave Whakatane the territorial advantage, and from a scrum Trainor got a nice pass to Connolly, who beat the opposition cleverly and touched down. Rhodes charged the kick and was on the ball before the kick’was taken. As, however, there was grave danger of injuring the player holding the hall if he kicked, he jumped over the ball instead, a sportsmanlike action which entitled him to the applause of the crowdf. The kick was taken as Rhodes got clear, hut missed. For the remainder of the game play quietened down considerably, but Cullimore was breaking away from the line-out repeatedly in fine style. With time short B. Harawira started a forward rush and the ball eventually passed through several hands for Biddle to end the movement by registering the final score, the kick at goal failing. Time was called with play in midfield. Tauranga 16, Whakatane 11. Mr R. Packman efficiently controlled the game. TUe ambulance brigade finished off a fairly busy afternoon by taking Gray away in the ambulance for medical attention to his hand. -JUNIOR GAMES. Cadets v. Matakana. Cadets Old Boys and Matakana tried conclusions on No. 1 ground as a curtain raiser to the representative game. From the kick-off Matakana pressed but Cadets’ defence i.tld, and good forward play, in which Cunliffe was conspicuous, worked play to Matakana territory. The ball came back to Johnston who kicked high, following up fast and boat the opposition to touch down well out. His kick narrowly missed. Cadets maintained the pressure and compelled Matakana to force, White, Matakana full-ba,ck, putting in some excellent defensive work meantime. Maintaining Hie pressure Cadets kept Matakana pinned down, Johnston adding a further 3 points from a penalty in the centre a few yards inside half way, just as half time was called. The second spell opened smartly, with Cadets defending, but they worked the ball back. Tremewan broke away, beat the opposition nicely with the ball at his feet and scored near the posts, Johnston converting. Matakana lost an opportunity when the wing, in an endeavour to work into a better position, touched down behind the dead ball line. Cadets came back and scored again, Johnston adding the major points, and the game ending Cadets 16, Matakana nil. Mr F. Bickers refereed the game.
