SUICIDE VOLCANO

Japan has a suicide spot even more fatally alluring than the Eiffel Tower or the Sydney Harbour Bridge, according to Mr Ward Price, the special correspondent of the Daily Mail, in Japan. Despite police precautions, he says, a regular stream of duicides flown towards Mount Mihara, a volcano situated on an island just outside Tokio Bay. On a recent Sunday six men sprang into the smoking abyss, and 15-men and five women were forcibly restrained. More than 40 have dived to death in the crater since January 1, and 150 have been dragged back from the edge. The mysterious lure of Mihara is being widely discussed. It has been proposed to forbid landing on the island except on business, but it is a favourite holiday resort for Tokio people, and the inhabitants protest that they should not be isolated because of suicide mania on the part of others.
