Opening of Season 1T VE-A-SIDE TOURN AM ENTS. The Hockey Association opened the season yesterday afternoon with five-a-side tournaments. The weather was dull but fine. There was a fair attendance. Prior to the commencement of play all the teams assembled in front of the main pavilion. A procession, totalling about sixty players, headed by the Municipal Band, under Bandmaster Stuart, then marched round iho playing field. The parade was one cf the best seen on the ground for a long time and at the conclusion the processionists were accorded the Jicarty applause of the spectators. A noticeable feature was the excellent playing of the march numbers by the Band. Mr Arthur Stewart, President of the Hockey Association, said he was pleased to see such a good muster of players and hoped the season would be a successful one. He also thanked the members of the feand for assembling and rendering musical items. The tournaments then commenced with the following results: True Blues A v. Rovers A. True Blues A.- D. Gamble (captain), H. Neno, K. Gifford, J. Mills, F. Playfair. Rovers A. — D. MacPherson, L. Hardy, D. Moore, Hazelden, A. Banks (captain). True Blues attacked from the start, and Neno trailed to the circle, Banks clearing and sending to MacPherson. Hardy carried on until Playfair sent back. Then Neno centred and Gamble joined in and beat Hazelden and netted to give Blues the lead. After resuming Neno broke clear. Banks managed to get to the circle as Nen6 was angling for a shot and deflected the ball just in time. Rovers combined and cleared, but Gifford led another offensive and sent the ball to Neno, who was stopped by MacPherson. Gifford sent) a long pass to Gamine, who. dribbled to the circle, Banks saving. Hard play ensued in Rovers’ territory and the whistle sounded time with the score one to nil in True Blues’ favour. Early in the game Sowarby made an opening and passed to Allely, who dribbled clear and goaled. CountryUnited kept the play on the Blues’ side of half-way. Griffiths and Tonkin combined advantageously and penetrated the circle, but Randle saved skilfully. A little later Allely got a clear run and beat the goalie to register 1m sceond goal for CountryUnited. Just after changing round Allely and Sowerby dodged the opposing backs very neatly and Allely notched his third goal. Shortly afterwards Rolfe dribbled through in the middle of the field and was checked near the posts by Carter. Sowerby and Rolfe combined in a smart movement, which nonplussed the opposing backs and Sowerby scored, the game ending: Country-United 4, True Blues B, 0. Rovers B had a bye in the first round. Following the bully Milne made an opening and passed to Kennedy, who reached the circle and goaled, giving Rovers the early lead. Cambie and Gifford replied with a passing bout, Heslop checking on the northern wing. Bougen came away rapidly along the southern side of the ground and endeavoured to centre, but G4*ford blocked well and sent the ball to touch. Rovers attacked until Cambie cleared, and strenuous forward play ensued. Then Cambie broke clear and Neno joined issue and dribbled to the circle, but was called back. Immediately after Neno accepted a pass and took a shot which missed narrowly. Concerted work by Gifford and Mills enabled the Blues to attack, but the defence held. Cambie drove clear and raced Teasey for the ball, the latter just getting there and checking. Heslop secured on the southern flank and beat Playfair to drive and goal, making the scores: Rovers, 2; True Blues A, 0. In the semi-finals Country-United had a bye. Rovers B Win Final. Rovers B. —T. Heslop, F. Milne, F. Bougen, E. Kennedy, W. Teasey (captain). Country-United. — M. Mearns, HAllely, Capper-Starr. R. Sowerby, C. Randle (captain). The final provided a keen game. The early advantage was with Rovers, and Heslop -wound up a fast movement by scoring. Allely and Mea.rns combined and reached the other end, but Milne and Kennedy came back quickly. Kennedy beat one of the opposing backs very cleverly and drove and goaled: Rovers, *>• ‘Country-United. 0. Rovers continued to hold the upper hand and Milne gathered the ball in from a corner-hit and drove into the net, increasing the Rovers’ score to three. The play worked to midfield but no further score was registered, the game ending in Rovers’ favour by three goals to nil. GIBUS’ GAMES. The girls’ tournament was responsible for several keen games. The results were as follows; Triers A v. Y.M.P. The game was very even. Miss Ford played for a very good goal by running from her place as full-back and placing the ball in the net. Y M p missed a point by missing the net when in the circle. Triers won by one goal to nil. Win for Old Girls. Next Aretas A and Old Girls A took the field. This game was fast. Old Girls pressing into Areta’s twentyflve Miss Currie missed the net and after the bully at the twenty-five van! line Miss Tollemache scored. From the half way, with good combination. the Old Girls ran up and Miss Kennedy scored. Once more Miss Kennedy goaled. After the bully

Miss Currie scored. Following a hard struggle Miss Rowe scored for Areta. From a 25 bully Miss Kennedy scored, making the final scores: Old Girls, 5; Aretas, 1. Aretas B v. Triers B. This game was somewhat slower and the play ragged. Mrs Banks took the ball up the field and scored. After the bully she repeated this performance, making the game finish: Triers, 2; Aretas, 0. Triers A v. 01(1 Girls A. When these teams started the play went rapidly from one end of the field to the other. Miss 1 Scott then scored for Triers. Miss Currie stopped another shot by Miss Cameron. Miss Walker fought hard and scored for Triers, leaving the score at: Triers, 2; Old Girls A, 0. Old Girls B v. Tilers B. Miss Jones ran down and missed the net. At full time'there was no score, so the play went on for the third five minutes. After the bully Miss Tassell took the ball up and scored. Old G.irls B won by 1 to nil. Triers Win Final. The final game was Triers A v. Old Girls B. Play was very keen in this game and after a struggle Mis Parkinson scored. From a coinci Mrs Banks scored, making Triers the winner by two to nil. OTHER EVENTS. Three other events were held during the afternoon, and the results were as follows: Three-legged Race, Men. —D. Cambie and F. Playfair 1, F. Milne and W. Teasey 2, L. Hardy and D. MacPherson 3. Five pairs competed, and Cambie and Playfair won easily. Thread-the-Needle Race. — Mrs Bowver and E. Kennedy 1, Mrs Parkinson and P. Milne 2, Miss F. Kennedy and F. Playfair 3. Twelve pairs competed. Overhead Ball. —The Old Girls defeated Aretas. Triers defeated Y.M.P. The final between Triers and Old Girls was won by Old Girls. The referees for the hockey games were Messrs L. Green and J. Curtis. The judges of the running events were Messrs W. S. Harris and W r . H. Gifford. ARETA CLUB. The annual meeting of the Areta Hockey Club was held yesterday. There was a good attendance of players. Miss J. Bamberry presiding. The balance sheet was read and adopted. Mi«s Muriel Rowe was elected captain, Miss Evelyn Merriman vice-cap-tain, and Miss Jean Bamberry secretary and treasurer. A vote of thanks was accorded Miss M. Rendell for her excellent design and workmanship on the Club s new banner. The following members have joined the Club; Misses M. Rowe, E. Merriman, J. Bamberry, G. Brown, M. Rendell F. Merriman, M. Moore, N. Norris, J. Standen. H. Faulkner, E. Norris. The Club will enter a team for the Association’s championship and is very hopeful of securing thenshare of the honours.
