THREE COAL MINES IN KING COUNTRY IDLE

“Postponement of Wages” FURTHER MEETING TO-MORROW. Huntly. April IS. A\ T ork at three of the mines in the Huntiy district, those of the Renown, Glen Afton and Taupiri companies, was not resumed Hub morning, as the result of the action of the owners of the Renown mine in asking their employees to accept a postponement of wages to the extent of 20 per cent, during the “coal war.” During the week-end a notice was posted in Huntly by the secretary of the Miners’ District Council, Mr AV. Davison, stating that owing to the owners’ terms being enforced at the Renown mine, the resolution passed at a massed meeting last week would be pul into force and all three mines would remain idle. Miners were instructed not to present themselves for work until further notice. After a meeting of the council, Mr Davison communicated with the secretary of the Coal Mine Owners' Association, Mr T. 0. Bishop, in AVeilington. It is stated that until a favourable reply is received or some action is taken by the owners, the mines concerned will remain idle. Work was resumed at the Pukemiro and AVilton collieries. A separate agreement exists between the owners of the AVilton mine and the men, while the local miners’ union at Pukemiro is not affiliated with the district council, but is linked up with the Miners’ National Council. A further meeting of the men is to be held in Huntly to-morrow evening.
