LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The pastures have benefited considerably by steady rain which fell since Saturday night. The fall for the twenty-four hours ended 9 a.m. yesterday was 37 points and for the twenty-four hours ended 9 a.m. today 11 points. There is now a good flush of feed on ‘all top-dressed lands.

The full-back in the Maori football team on the domain on Saturday who went on at half-time played without boots, and showed much speed and smartness in fielding. Several times he caused diversion by hurdling over opponents. On another occasion he attempted to kick the ball, but he missed and his knee came in contact with another player who was incapacitated for a few minutes.

Messrs J. Padlie (Superintendent of the Tauranga Fire Brigade), Mr A. Stewart (Secretary), and Mr W.. Padlid represented the local Brigade at a social function at Te Aroha on Saturday night, when a gold star, for twenty-five years’ service, was presented to Mr Pilkington, Superintendent of the Te Aroha Fire Brigade. Mr Pilkington was also the recipient of a chiming clock from the Council and citizens of Te Aroha. and also a set of cutlery from members of the brigade. Mr B. C. Robbins, of Tauranga, who is a Past President of the New Zealand Fire Brigades’ Association, was also present at the function.

While removing the halter from one of the bulls on his farm at Te Wajroa, one day last week, Mr H. J. Clarke was knocked down and trampled upon. Fortunately a couple of men were close at hand and drove the bull off quickly, but not before Mr Clarke was much bruised. It was fortunate that help was immediately available, as otherwise the results might have been much more serious. After the incident the bull was behorned.

The Tauranga primary football team played a match on Saturday last against a combined team from the Mount Maunganui, Gate Pa and Otumoetai schools, the former winning by nine points to nil. Tries for the winners were registered by G. Bell, L. Marine and R. Booth. Mr Bert Warner was referee.

A local firm, the Tauranga Furnishing Co., Ltd,, has secured the contract for re-furnishing the Central Hotel, Victoria. Street, Auckland. There was keen competition for the contract and the local company was the lowest. There was only £1 4s between the two lowest tenderers and £1 18s between the highest and lowest.
