CONFLICT.

DO WOMEN “ROLL THEIR OWN?” Do Sydney women “roll their own” cigarettes? (asks the Sydney Sun). Curiosity has been aroused by the claim of a witness before the Tariff Board that they certainly do. Tobacco travellers have reported to their firms that they have discovered the fact. However, to discover how many Sydney women really make up their own cigarettes, a tour of the city revealed the following:— “Most certainly not —here!" was the haughty reply of a goddess In charge of the tobacco kiosk at a favourite city hotel. “Our patrons may smoke gaspers, but. . . ” and unable to withstand the withering look, the investigator stole away. A noted esquire of dames (to the cells), at Central Police Station, recoiled. “No,” was the terse reply, “only an odd metho. swigger, trawled from Hyde Park.” Not Much Sold. The search was continued. At big stores, and small street kiosks, a like answer was forthcoming. According to salesmen, very little loose tobacco is bought by girls, and mostly they are contented with “gaspers.” That many, however, do “roll their own” is evident by a range of gaily-coloured papers on sale. For those who cannot ■ manipulate tobacco and paper economically, the merchants point to a snappy range of made-up “fills,” in a delectable series of shades."
