HURRICANE SWEEPS BRITISH WEST INDIES

Towns and Settlements Demolished. FOURTEEN PEOPLE KILLED. Rugby, Sept. 19. The Secretary of State for the Colonies, Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister, has received a telegram from the Governor of the Bahamas, Captain B. E. Clifford, reporting that a hurricane swept the colony on September 5. High winds were experienced over a wide area, reaching unprecedented velocity at Abaco Island, where the town of Green Turtle Cay was demolished and Hopetown was partially demolished. Three other settlements were practically ruined. The casualties were: Killed, 14; injured, between 60 and 70, including five drowned in a tidal wave. The medical position Is well in hand. Government and private buildings suffered severe damage.
