PRINCE AS FARMER.

MARKETS MUST BE STUDIED. The Prince of Wales, who has been a farmer for almost 20 years, told an audience of farmers at the country fair that they were behind the times (says a Yeovil, Somerset, message). "We farmers must study our markets,” he said. “A couple of cutlets for mother has replaced the great joints of beef that used to be eaten with relish by the family oh the Sabbath. It seems to me we still are producing goods that are suitable in England 30 years ago —big cheese and big joints of meat." The Prince practices diversified farming, like almost everybody In the west of England. Devon and Cornish butter, eggs and cream are famous, and West Country sheep and cattle are among the best. Marketing Is the big problem, and the Prince . is one of the leaders- in the movement to teach farmers how to pack their produce so as to fetch top prices.. ■ ~ The Prince does his farming at Stoke Climsland, a, few miles from Plymouth. His farm is about 350 acres, TOO of it in grass. He built up his famous Shorthorn herd at Stoke Climsland, but transferred it to the old John Wilkinson' farm in Nottinghamshire two years ago. Now Mr Dave Annand, his farm manager, concentrates on Devon cattle. The herd numbers 1,0, including 30 cows in piilk. The Prince hopes one of his Devon heifers will head her class at the fair. He breeds for shows, but blue ribons and pedigreed sales are not his only concern. His farm follows up the diversified plan with a flock of about 200 sheep, kept on purely commercial lines. Poultry runs on a free range, and a few pigs are kept. The 100 acres under plough are used for raising winter feed.
