SCENES IN STREETS
(Special to Times.) Sydney, April 1
The appearance in the Central Police Court (o-day of Captain F. E. de Groot. who cut the ribbon at the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, was the occasion for disorderly scenes which culminated in clashes between the police and members of the New Guard and others.
In connection with (he scenes outside. Mr H. Burling, J.P.. has issued the following statement. “As a Justice of the Peace I believe in law and order, but I think the police exceded their duties to-day in the waj’ they handled disinterested citizens. I was jostled by constables a.nd knocked off my feet. I am not a member of the New Guard nor am I in any way interested in Captain de Groot’s case. I protest emphatically at being manhandled by the police.” Captain de Groot was remanded.
