SLASHED.
CONVICTS CHARGED AT DARTMOOR. London, March 11. Thomas Da.vis and David Brown, Dartmoor convicts were to-day charged at Tavistock, respectively, with wounding Officer Ernest Birch and attempting to wound Officer Arthur Udy. The charges arose out of the Dartmoor mutiny on January 24. It was stated in evidence that Davis was exercising when he jumped on Bircsh, who back was turned and slashed his cheeks with a razor blade inserted in a stick. Birch, assisted by other -officers, overpowered him.
Birch, cross-examined, said that he could not say how many convicts had been flogged through his reports. His losing count was not due to their number. Medical evidence showed that one of Davis’s ribs was found to be broken after the mutiny. Brown, it was said, had another razor-blade attached to a stick, with which he slashed at Udy. When Udy entered his cell, after having been defied to take Brown out, two other officers helped to overpower Brown, who 'was batoned on the head and carried to hospital insensible.
Both the accused were committed for trial.
