LABOUR PARTY.
NATIONAL CONFERENCE. Wellington, Mark 30. The annual conference of the New Zealand Labour Party is now being held. The retiring president, Mr H. G. R. Mason, M.P., in welcoming the delegates, said the conference was the most important ever held. They were faced with one of the greatest economic and social crises in the history of the working people. He hoped the delegates would arrange for creating a strong public opinion which would stay the legislation which was being enacted by the Coalition Government Mr W. J. Jordan, M.P., was elected national president, Mr W. Atkinson vice-president, and Mr J. T. Thorn national secretary. Mr IT. E. Holland presented the report of the Parliamentary Labour Party, which reviewed the work of the various sessions and outlined the party's attitude toward each of the measures introduced. Mr Holland said when the House resumed, the Labour Party would be called upon to make another sustained fight against further wage and salary reductions, attacks on services and various classes of pensions. The following resolutions were passed:— This conference congratulates Mr P. Fraser, M.P., and Mr J. A. Lee, M.P.. on the stand taken by them under the circumstances which resulted in their suspension.
This conference places on record its high appreciation of the efforts of its Parliamentary representatives in their magnificent and strenuous fight against the destructive and hopeless class legislation of the Coalition Government.
This conference approves of the shorter Avorking day or Aveek as being an effective method of dealing Avith unemployment.
