FIERCE STORMS IN AUSTRALIA
Worst For Thirty Years. FIVE MEN DROWNED. Hobart, March 28. The worst weather for 30 years is reported, from the north-west coast of Tasmania. Much damage has been done to roads and houses along the shore, and railway and telephone communications are disorganised through storms. A repetition of the serious floods of three years ago is feared. Melbourne, March 28. Wild gales are thrashing Bass Strait. The steamer Marrawah. 600 tons, was in a serious plight between King and Hummock Islands, owing to a breakdown in the engineroom. Two other vessels rushed to her aid, but news came from the Marrawah that temporary repairs had been effected. She has a crew of 19 and and eight passengers. A later message from the steamer said she was proceeding slowly under her own power to Stanley, 70 miles distant. The weather was moderating. All on board were safe. A gale, with a velocity of 6 0 miles an hour, accompanied by heavy rain, lashed the Victorian coast at the week-end. Small ships were forced to take shelter. Adelaide, March 28.
The squalls which swept St. Vincent Gulf on Saturday caused much havoc to pleasure craft, 22 of which capsized. Five yachtsmen were drowned.
