Phutkins was selling out, and the local auctioueer had sent a man round to make an inventory of the furniture. Her suspicions aroused by the length of time he had been in the dining-room and the unbroken silence there Mrs Phutkins decided to find out how the work was proceeding On the sofa, to her horror, lay the valuer, sterterously asleep. On the sideboard was the whisky decanter, which, quite full that morning, was now quite empty. But the inventory had not been entirely neglected. At the top of the first page stood a single entry: “One revolving carpet.’’
