FLAX INDUSTRY.
NEED FOE ASSISTANCE. At a cdnfeernce of the Franklin Combined Chambers of Commerce at Papatoetoe this week it was decided to urge the Government to take Immediate steps to assist the flax industry. Mr Mclnness said that flax! and sisal were being produced in Java by sweated labour, the rates of- pay being as low as 2s a day.; A duty on foreign imports would help to put the New Zealand industry on an economic basis. There were thousands of acres of land in New Zealand not suitable for farming, but suitable for flax growing, and flax planting would provide work for many unemployed!! Mr J, Dean suggested that the Government should be: asked to provide the necessary, funds for research ' into the latest methods of flax-mill-ing.'
