NEARING THE MILLION
XELSOX’S FRUIT CROP. At the beginning of March the growers’ estimate of export fruit in the Nelson district was 950,000 cases but now the harvesting of the crop is in full swing the growers have estimated an even larger total of 950,000 cases, bringing the number very near to the million mark. It was only a few years ago that the half-million total was reached and aroused much interest, and later when New Zealand’s total export reached 1,000,000 cases much attention was drawn to the industry, the millionth case being sent to the Prince of Wales. The last few years have seen fruit-growing expand further in Nelson and more scientific methods of cultivation, combined with increasing knowledge of manuring and spraying, has resulted in greater production per acre, until now the 1,000,000 eases export from this district alone is within easy reach. Last year’s total was 815,000 cases.
To date this seaon 350,000 cases have been sent from the province, 12,800 going to Canada, 38,000 to the Continent. 13000 to South America, and the remainder to the United Kingdom. Last w r eek 100,000 cases were sent forward from the orchards for inspection.
