A DAY WITH LIONS.

RHODESIAN BAGS SEVEN. The following thrilling narrative is vouchsafed for by the Rev. S. Pie--naar, of Nyanyl, a mission station in Northern Rhodesia:—A young tobacco planter and farmer performed a great feat, and perhaps a record so far as lion-killing goes. Accompanied by his native boy, he went to the fields, when he soon became aware that lions were about. He encountered two and had the good fortune to kill both of them. lie then sent his boy home to get more ammunition, and on the return of the native, the spoors of other lions were followed. Within a few hours the tobacco planter had accounted for another three lions. When he, met the sixth, a beautiful male, he almost met his death. Aiming at the head, he hit the animal, but, unfortunately, only maddened it. The lion made one leap and bowled over the hunter. In the struggle that ensued the lion got the better of the young farmer, and started mauling his arm. He, however, managed to get his hand into the beast’s mouth and caught its longue.' This he failed to hold, as it was too slippery, so he next caught hold of the jaw, but noticed that he was being overpowered, so shouted to his native, who was standing aghast, to strike the beast on the head with the rifle. This the native did. Gradually the lion let go its hold, and when once free again the planter seized the rifle and shot it in spite of a mangled arm and hand. No sooner had he killed the sixth than a seventh lion made its appearance. A shot rang out and the tobacco planter bagged his seventh victim. He was assisted to the hospital by his native servant and detained for a week before he was well again.
