“You go into a tobacconist’s shop get an ounce of tobacco” bawled an anti-tobacco crank, addressing a Whitechapel (London) audience, “yes, and you get more my friends! For in the wake of that ounce of tobacco come beer, whiskey, gin and !—” “Lumiue,” shouted somebody, “’oo’s yer terbacconist, guv’nor?” (Roars of laughter). But, joking apart, it's a fact that many smokers never touch liquor. As to the harmfulness of smoking, it all depends on the tobacco. Brands there are. quite unsafe to smoke habitually—foul with nicotine. The imported goods are mostly like that. Our New Zealand tobaccos on the contrary are practically free from the poison, because they are toasted. Toasting is a wonderful purifier, and imparts to the leaf the flavour and aroma that has made N.Z. tobacco world-famous. There are four brands only of toasted: Riverhead Gold, Navy Cut No. 3, Cavendish and Cut Plug No. 10. But their success has brough out imitations. Take care what you buy!
