SHIELD MATCH, •‘Rover,” writing in the Whakatane Press in reference to the Te liuriuul Apanui Shield match between Te Puke and Rangitaiki says: “Renata who had replaced Kingi on the wing, and Hataraka, the full back, obstructed and in the melee that followed Re-

nata was penalised. Unfortunately, the writer did not have a dealt view of the episode but the penalty (so I was informed later) was for not laying the ball after being tackled. Dare placed the ball almost on the twentyfive line dead in front of the goal posts, and appeared to be as cool as the proverbial cucumber—the honour and glory of Te Puke was entrusted to the hardy and experienced veteran. Sure enough the ball sailed through and true. The whistle sounded, and Nero and his followers, in their most hetic moments had nothing on the Te Puke fans. It was a thrilling game, with a sensational - book-like finish. * “In the Te Puke backs Dare was outstanding, running and tackling in great style; in fact, all the back lino played good football. Corbett, Cooney, Dare, McKenzie and Webber form a brilliant back division. The forwards all worked hard, and I will not venture to single out any player in particular. They played as • a pack and played well. In the Raugitaiki backs the two How-ells and Lees were great, rising to great heights particularly in defence. Hataraka has played better football, and the winger, Reweti, and Kiugi are purely attacking players. Buck Kiugi injured his shoulder and was replaced by Renata. The forwards have played better football., They lacked the zip of previous matches, Whitely and Tama were not up to their best form. Brodrick and Howarth both played solid games. Burt, at rover, justified his inclusion in that position. He often disorganised the Te Puke rearguard. Os-w-ald at half was quite good. He made one glaring mistake, after badly beating the defence. He had a

clean field with only the fullback to pass and with Buck Kingi outside him. He tried to side-step, but failed. Thus a certain try went begging. Reviewing the game from all angles, the score is a good indication of the day’s play”. GOLF. In a match on the Te Puke Club's links yesterday the local lady players had a win over the representatives of the Mokoroa Golf Club of Whakatane by 12 matches to 3. This is a reversal of the result of the last week-end’s game between the same two teams the Whakatane representative winning by 14 to 1. A dainty lunch was provided by the local club members, and was served in che pavilion. Before leaving for home the Whakatane players expressed their pleasure at having made the trip to Te Puke, the outing proving a most enjoyable one.
