CATTLE RAISING.

POVERTY BAY HERDS. Since the severe dry spell in Poverty Bay and on the East Coast three or four years ago took toll of cattle l there has been’ a gradual building up of herds, and it is thought that this winter there will be sufficient cattle to sec P,ov‘erty Bay on the map once more as a district on which other parts will rely for at least some of their beef (says a Gisborne message). The surplus provided by the building of the herds should come in particularly useful this winter, in v*e\v of the fact that Hawke’s Bay has been experiencing a dry spell It is thought that there will be a profitable market both at Addington and Westfield, and that the supplies from Poverty Bay to these quarters will increase in future years. The completion of the cattle yards at Gisborne has stimulated an.inquiry from Canterbury for the shipment of ' cattle,, and already a small' consignment has gone to Westport, this being the first to be shipped from Gisborne for four years.
