HURINUI APANUI SHIELD GAME

TAURANGA DEFEATS TAUFO A GOOD MARGIN. Tauranga successfully withstood Taupo’s challenge for the Hurinui Apanui Shield in a match played on the local domain on Saturday afternoon before a largo attendance from all parts of the Bay of Plenty. The visitors fielded a strong side. Their forwards were about equal to the local vanguard and had the advantage in weight. The Tauranga Hacks, however, possessed excellent combination and their efforts showed the desired finish. It was the sujjerioritv of the local rearguard which gave Tauranga a substantial margin in points when the final bell sounded. Plio home backs displayed great resourcefulness and were very'ably led by Farmer, who once again proved himself an astute general. The visitors, who reside in a widely scattered area, are a fine body of men, and if they could get together and train would be a very formidable combination. They are to he complimented on their sporting spirit in making such a long journey. The occasion was the first time that a Taupo team has visited .Tauranga. and local enthusiasts hope to see more of them in the Rugby arena in the future. The Tauranga players acquitted themselves meritoriously, and it now behoves them to keep fit for the match which they will play in a fortnight against Opotiki, who are the final challengers this season for the Shield. G, lies then made a characteristic opening and sent the ball to E. lies, who handed on to Tassell, who slipped when almost clear of the opposition. The Taupo forwards massed and drove up field, Farmer checking and then making ground with a powerful kick. Raraeka made a dash down the eastern lino and beat several men before ho was tackled by G. lies. The Taupo forwards broke through from a scrum, but were steadied by G. lies. Policy, Bickers and Cameron led the homo forwards to the Taupo salient. A long range punt by Farmer saw Haua race up and smother tho return. Several local forwards came up rapidly, but Savage managed to clear. Kaipara intercepted and the visitors combined and made way to the home territory. Savage fielded brilliantly and followed up the kick to McLeod, who fended him off and was then thrown into touch. Concerted work by T. Thompson and Grace saw the latter shine in a strong run. The play swung across field. Tassell opened up the game and the ball was sent out to E, lies, who raced through on the western side to score a brilliant try. The. kick was resultless; Tauranga, 19; Taupo, 6. The final quarter opened at a clinking pace. Taupo combined splendidly and delivered a desperate team attack in the north-west-ern corner. The local forwards held on tenaciously and endeavoured to clear, but the visitors proved irresistible and Jones scored from a sharp forward thrust. Manahi converted: Tauranga, 19; Taupo, 11. The Tauranga team immediately launched a telling offensive and Farmer tried to drop a I goal from the field. Mountfort made an opening; and Tassell, E. _ lies and Turner carried on. This fleet runner was nearly clear when E. lies sprinted j and stopped him by a resolute tac- j kle. Brilliant fielding by Farmer and Savage saw the ball eventually reach Taupo’s citadel. The visiting forwards retaliated effectively and swept through. Grace secured and sprinted across, but ran over the dead bal] line before touching down. Tho whistle then sounded with the scores: Tauranga, 27; Taupo, 11. SCHOOL WINS GREEN CUP. The School fifteen met tho Cadets Old Boys junior team in the final for the Cup presented by Mrs J. G. Green. A keen game was anticipated and from start to finish there was not a dull moment, f School, though much lighter, showed better combination than Cadets. They secured the early lead and were never headed, leaving the field victors by seventeen points j to nine. Mr B. Riggir was referee. I School now hold the Oliver and Green Cups and are to be complimented on the high standard of Rugby which they have shown this season.
