TOTALISATOR IN BRITAIN. Rugby, July 3. The total isator was in use for the first time on the Newmarket and Carlisle racecourses yesterday. RACEHORSES SOLD. Mr H. Burch, of New Zealand, has disposed of Stormy, Becalmed and Dalston to a buyer whose name has not been disclosed (says a Sydney message). _ PUBLICATION OF DIVIDENDS. The edict .landing in New Zealand prohibiting the publication ot the amount of totalisator dividends has long formed the subject of much caustic comment in racing circles, for it is generally recognised that it plays no part in keeping down betting, but drives underground what should be allowed, says “Sir Modrcd.” Whatever may be the fate of other amendments to the Gaming Act which arc to be sub mitted to Parliament at the present session, the one directed to the repeal of the section barring the publication of totalisator dividends, there is reason to hope, will be carried. In both New South Wales and Victoria, it may be remarked, rhe publication of bettings odds prior to the running of races is prohibited, but there is no restriction on publishing the rate of odds and the amount of totalisator dividends after the running. NOTES. At a meeting of the committee of

the Canterbury Jockey Club it was reported that Mr P. D. McNab had consented to continue as started for the Canterbury Jockey Club. This means that while Mr McNab will officiate at Riccarbon next season provincial clubs will have to make other arrangements. The Matamata owned gelding Dobbin will shortly be given the opportunity to make good as a hurdler. On several occasions a while back the son of Quin Abbey, who is trained in the South, was given a run over the battens and jumped very well. It it reported that the jockey, Walter Sibbritt. who piloted Taj Mah to victory in the One Thousand Guinea contest in England recently, is a native of Perth, Western Australia.

W. J. Tomkinson’s trotting record for tho present season has not been beaten in New Zealand for many years. At tho present time he has trained 33 winners, and piloted a similar number of successful performers. Mr J. S. Barrett’s recent purchase-, Grand National, will not go to Riccarton until after, the Wellington meeting, for which he is being trained by Mrs A. McDonald. The leadng sires and the earnings of stock for the season are: —Paper Money, - £21,477; Lucullus, £15,802; Day Comet, £15,137; Lord Quex, £14,108; Solfcrino, £11,827; Biaogne, £10,646; Aero, £10,129; Chief Ruler, £10,067. It is reported'from Sydney that Oratrix may be taken to Brisbane by 11. Lorigan to compete in the King’s Cup. No decision has been made as to whether Bright Glow will be raced in Australia next season. Meantime she is reported too be doing exceedingly well in her work at Hawera. It is anticipated that Mr J. Cameron, of Hawera, will replace Mr Aldworth as judge at Napier . Park meetings. Mr L. Gordon, of Wannabe, is now owner "of the two English sires, Solferino and the Waikato horse Yalkyrian. Te Hora, the half-brother to Tc Kara, is among the active brigade at T© Awamutu. This is not a story of “Chinaman’s luck,” but of luck in China, where they seem to be able to run a race meeting or tjvo in spite of all the fighting that has been goling on. “Billy Tingle, the Australian boxer” says a Shanghai cable in the Sydney Sun, now physical instructor of the Municipal Schools and an amateur jockey, holds the world record for parimutuel odds, paid for a win on a pony he was riding. This won the Jim© Handicap of tho Chinese Jockey Club, one ticket purchased for a win paying £1519 for 10s. The previous China record was ; £IOSO for a 10s ticket. Australia’-e record dividend is £836 16s for £l, paid in South Australia in 1885.

F. A. Waddell, who was formerly associated with his late uncle, Mr Stewart Waddell, has taken over the stables near the Napier Park racecourse, formerly occupied by W, McKinnon. He has got a team of live to start with, and most of them have to be broken in. They are a well-bred and likely lot, and as Waddell is a painstaking- mentor who has shown his ability both as a rider and trainer, with a number of first-class performers Ho should do well. He may, too, take the seat on some of the animals himself when the weights suit. The horses which Waddell has in hand are a rising three-year-old gelding bay filly ,by Lackham—Putprino, rising four-year-old gelding by Our King—Putoriho, rising five-year-old brown gelding by Tribulation—Hastings, rising four-year-old brown filly, by Tribulation— Hastings, and rising three-year-old bay filly by Lackham—Hastings.
