TAURANGA HOSPITAL BOARD AFFAIRS

___ mm ■MMqpw THREE MEMBERS KETIKING APPRECIATION OF COLLEAGUES. The ordinary meeting of the Tauranga Hospital Board was held m the Board’s Room at the Tauranga Hospital yesterday. Present: Messrs T. Lochhead (Chairman), V. J. Scantlcbury, J. Hume, J. A. McGhie, D. Grant, B. C. Robbins, R. King, and A. Brown. Balance Sheet. The Controller and Auditor-Gen-eral forwarded halance-shcebfor the year ended March 31, 1928, which was certified as correct. Mr Hume moved —That the bal „ ‘ sheet be adopted and copies and carried. Acting Director-General of Health, Wellington, wrote advising that tho Minister has approved oi Board incurring an overdraft the extent of £ISOO during the Sst Str” months of tho current financial year. Town Board, wrote enclosing cheque for £34 11 I’ 0 „ hl t hr. mated was forwarded on tno understanding that it will be spen on improvements at the Te Puke h °Mr King moved—That a. reply bo sent that the Board will be pleased to accede to the stipulation as outlined in the letter.—Seconded by Mr Robbins and carried. The Secretary read copy of a letter regarding Hospital Fund at Te Puke as forwarded by nun to Messrs H. J. Gill (Te Mate!) ami A Montgomery (Cambridge): Referring to our previous correspondence on the above subject, I have been instructed to write to you again and point out that ray Board’s efforts to improve the conditions at To Puke hospital are being curtailed through lack or funds. To show that the matter is urgent, may X mention that it will be necessary before winter to provide some additional facilities for drying clothes, as the present arrangements have caused the staff much inconvenience in bad weather. The Te Puke Town Board has now paid over to my Board the fund in their keeping, and I hope that you and your co-Trustee, to whom I am writing in similar terms, will endeavour to expedite the payment to my Board of the fund in your keeping.” Mr A. Montgomery, Cambridge, replied as follows; “I may say I wrote you some time ago agreeing to hand over the moneys, provided my co-Trustee would also agree. Later, in conversation with him, he said he was finite willing to fall into line, subject to advice from an Auckland soilicitor. I have not heard from him since, and would suggest you get in touch' with Mr Gill on the ’phone.” . It was decided te again communicate with Mr Gill on the subject. Fees Increased. The Acting Director-General of Health, Wellington, wrote advising that the scale of patients’ fees at King George V. Hospital, Rotorua, has been increased and now is: adults, 12/- per diem; children under 16 years, 9/- per diem. The question of raising the fees at the local hospital was raised by Mr Grant. . It was decided to refer the matter to the new Board. Katikati District Nurse. Mrs M. M. Johnston, Katikati, wrote forwarding cheque for £4 on account of the Katikati district nurse’s fund. Mrs Hatch, district nurse at Katikati, forwarded epitome of work done for the month of March. Fifty-three patients were attended'. Fees collected totalled £7 15/6. Mrs Hatch stated she would like to take her month’s annual leave to commence from May 1. The Secretary reported that Lc was making arrangements for a relieving nurse at Katikati. Medical Superintendent’s Report. Dr. J. B. Mac Diarmid submitted the following report for tho month of March: Forty-one patients were admitted; 48 discharged; and 21 remained in hospital at the end of the month. The daily average was 22. There were no deaths. Seven notifiable diseases were admitted: 2 diphtheria, 2 typhoid, 2 dysentery, 1 phthisis. Gifts for Tauranga Hqspital. Miss G. C. Burke, Acting Matron ofl the Tauranga Hospital, in a report dated April 17, stated: “I wish to thank the following for gifts: Magazines and Books. —Mesdames Hetherington, Wills and Renshaw, Miss Humphries, Messrs A. Woods and Scantlcbury. Fruit. —Mesdames Monk, Mountfort, and McKenzie, Miss Mayfield, Messrs Watt, Miller, Darragh and A. Davoren. Bulbs. —Mesdames C. Jordan and Bruce Beale. Venison.—Mr A. Hardy. Vlases. —Mrs Monk. Rabbits. —Mr Teasey. Trout. —Messrs Cazalet and Sladden. Race Tickets. —Bay oS Plenty Jockey Club. Holy Trinity Church and St. George’s Church, Gate Pa.—Large quantity of fruit, vegetables and eggs and a donation of £l. Waihi Salvation Army Band for music rendered at the Hospital on Easter Sunday. Te Puke Maternity Hospital. Miss E. Chappell, Matron of tho Te Puke Maternity Hospital, forwarded report for the month of March. Twenty patients were admitted. and twenty-three discharged; three remained in hospital on April 1. Tauranga District Nurse. Miss B. C. Whittaker, district health nurse. Tauranga, forwarded epitome of work done and itinerary for the month of March. One

hundred and twenty-seven patients were attended. Miss Whittaker stated she will be taking her annual leave as from April 3. Farming Operations. The Secretary (Mr Lumlcy) reported that the farming operations . of the Board showed a profit of 1 £72/0/2 on the past year s working. The sum of £2O was allowed for rent of land. There was also a considerable saving in the cost of milk. The Board considered various L matters in committee, including tho a admission of patients to institu- r tions outside the Board’s district, e accounts due to the Board, and e other matters. < VALEDICTORY. Tho Chairman pointed out that the meeting would he tho last one of the present Board. He hoped that all the members would again come forward! and he returned. The past year bad been a pleasant and successful one. .Mr Brown said he regretted that ho would not be seeking re-election, ( as he contemplated leaving the district. , J Mr Grant stated that Mr Brown had been a valuable member of | the Board. He (Mr Grant) was ] not seeking re-election to tho Board. Mr King paid a tribute to the i services rendered by Messrs Brown ( and Grant on behalf of the Board. i Mr Brown had occupied an important and unique position in the district both with the trav- .< elling public and those associated with public affairs. He was a_Jso wePi-known for his generosity. Mr Grant was a prominent public man and had taken a leading part in loca I bodies’ affairs for many i yeoj rs. He had always been watch- < ful of the interests of tho ratepayers. He moved —That the Board plew -‘es on record its appreciation of the services of Messrs Brown a -ad Grant, and extends to them bpst wishes. Mr Scantlebury, in seconding •the motion, endorsed Mr King’s re-marks. He (Mr Scantlebury) was one of the Borough candidates for the Board, and if returned, he woiald miss Messrs’ Brown and Grant. The Chairman voiced his regret that Messrs Brown and Grant were severing their association with the Board, and said both' had been valuable members. Mr Rob bins said he understood that the R'ev. E. C. Hetherington was also re itiring from the Board. The retiren lent of Messrs Brown and Grant meant that the Board was losing . experienced members, and he was sure the Board’s institutions h, ad profited by their services. It was agreed to add the name of Rev. Hetl lerington to tee motion. j Messrs Hui ne and McGhie endorsed the rt unarks already made in reference 1 to the retiring members, and the motion was then put and carried by acclamation.
