SIDE ROADS CHARGE ON LOCAL BODIES A HAMILTON PROPOSAL. (Per Press Association) Hamilton, Marcli*~s A suggestion that loans should be raised on the security of motor revenue to provide abundant funds for highway construction was made by Dr pinfold. Deputy Mayor, at last night’s meeting of the Automobile Association. He pointed out that many times the present construction fund could be made available.

Mr G. W. Hutchison, Secretary of the Auckland Association, said the original plan of the late Government liad been to raise £300,000 a year byloan for construction, but as there was a surplus from maintenance this was .transferred to construction and an effort was made to build the roads out of.revenue. If the original plan were followed plenty of funds would be available end the present outlayavoided. The meeting also discussed the nationalisation of highways. Air J. Park, an official of the Auckland Association said tho difficulty would he that under nationalisation the Highways Board must have power to demand certain quotas from local bodies towards the cost of construction. T)r Waddell., of Hamilton, explained that the proposal from Hamilton was that the Highways Board should control the main roads and local bodies the side roads.
