Ilka was at 7 to 1, with a tendency to recede, but when- the change of jockeys was made Ilka firmed to 5 to 2. The race was won by the odds-ou favourite, Wallace Bower, who beat Ilka by a length and a-quarter. The Te Awamnfcu owner-trainer 11. L. Russell had Mount Marta and Berinthia racing at the Gosford (Sydney) meeting on November 16. The former, with R. E. Thomson in the saddle, ran third in the Jumpers Plat Race, while Berinthia, after occupying second berth in the Flying Handicap, came out later in the day and accounted for the Highweight Handicap. She was ridden by Thomson in this event, and started at long odds. The report conies from Calcutta that an amazing accident occurred to the Maharajah of Ratlam in a game of polo. During a melee the Maharajah was attacked by a coun-try-bred horse ridden by an opponent. and forced down on his pony’s neck. The attacking pony then lifted him out of the saddle and held him in its teeth for fully a minutes until another player gave the animal a blow on the head with a polo stick, which forced the pony to release its hold,. The Maharajah’s hip muscles were severely bruised.
