OBITUARY

MR ALBERT ILES,

With painful suddenness news was received in town yesterday afternoon that while playing a game on the Taurauga South boUiug green, Mr Albert lies, a wellknown townsman, had collapsed and died immediately. The late Mr lies, who was sixty-eight years o! age, was born in Christchurch his parents having come out to New Zealand in the year in one of the ■ “four ships’’ which brought settlers to Canterbury, lie was educated at St. Michael's Anglican school Christchurch, and later served his t hue as a cabinet-maker. He was in the furniture and auctioneering, business in Christchurch for many years. Mr lies was a keen athlete and Rugby footballer. He was captain of the Sydenham Football Club in the early eighties, and represented Canterbury and Southland for several yea’rs. He was a notable runner and won many races against high-class runners. About fourteen years ago he moved from Christchurch to Auckland and after being in business in the latter city for seven years, moved to Taurauga. wheie he established a business which he conducted up to the time of his death. Although Mr Ilea did not enter public life he always took a keen interest in all affairs calculated to promote the advancement of the town and district. He was a strong supporter of all kinds of outdoor sport, especially football. The late Mr lies is survived bv Mrs lies and three sons—Messrs Arthur George and Eric, all of Taurauga to whom the greatest sympathy will be extended in their bereavement. A service will be held at Holy Trim ity Church at 5.30 p.m. to-day. and the funeral will take place at Purewa Cemetery, Auckland, at two o’clock to-morrow afternoon. Before the Borough Council com- \ menced business at the monthly meeting last night. His Worship the Mayor (Mr B. Hive 1 ) made feeling reference to the death of Mr A lies (father of Cr A. N. lies) and moved: That the Council extend to Mrs lies. Cr lies and family sincere sympathy with them in their bereavement.—The motion was passed, all present standing and observing a reverent silence. MISS E. M. NORRIE. Wc regret to chronicle, the death of Miss Ellison McFarlane Norrie, which -occurred at Pokeno yesterday. The djeceased lady was Uie eldest daughter of the late Rev. Thomas Norrie. and sister of Mrs A. G. Fallwell, of this town. The late Miss Norrie resided in Tauranga for some years and was greatly esteemed by a large circle of friends, who will hear of her death with deep regret.. ‘
