MARETU AND WAIHI FORESHORES

HARBOUR BOARD’S REQUEST NOT TO BE GRANTED. The following letter lias been received by Mr O. J. Hedge (Te Puke), from tin* Hen. G. J. Anderson. Miuistcr of Manny, in replv to the recent protest by a public meeting held in Te Puke against the vesting of the Alaketu and Waihi foreshores in the Tauranga Harbour Board : Wellington, 27th Juno, 1924. Dear Sir. Adverting to veir telegram of the sth inst-, forwarding protest of representations of local bodies against the vesting of the control of Alaketu and Waihi foreshores in the Tanran ga Harbour Board, I have now to advisy you that I have given very careful consideration to this matter and have come to- tho conclusion that it is inadvisable to grant what the board desires. In tho first place it is evident, from the report of the meeting which was held at 1 e Puke, that there is considerable objection in the district itself to these foreshores being vested in the Board, and in the second place, unless then' is some essential reason why the foreshores should he vested in the board it is considered unwise, as a matter of policy, for the Department to divest itself of its assets, as is proposed in this case. So far as concerns the proposal put forward by the meeting at Te Puke that the control should be vested in a special comm it te I have to point out that under the Harbours Act it is possible to vest only in a, Domain Board or a. local authority and apart from a Harbour Board a. local authority is defined as meaning a County Council, Citv or Borough Councii, Town Board, or Road Board. Yours faithfully, G. J. ANDERSON, Minister of Marine
