Mr Murdoch then moved —That Mr Norris’s letter be sent on to the .Borough Council, with a strong recommendation that the Council take action again with a view to acquiring a portion of the corner. .Mr .Moin-nr seconded. Mr Washer pointed out that a verandah supported by pillars was to he erected, whereas he understood it should- he a suspended verandah. Colonel Ward said the corner was a great danger trap. A substantial piece would have to he taken, off to make the .splay of nary advantage in the widening of the street. That would practically mean buying nearly the whole of the section. .Mr Whiting said to take a, large piece of land would cost a considerable sum and a poll of ratepayers would also have to he taken, He did not think the ratepayers would .sanction a loan for the purpose. The Chairman- agreed with Colonel Ward. Mr Murdoch's motion was put and carried unanimously.

Pj ('■posed Removal of Town Clock. Mr C. C. Norris wrote forward - in" copy of a letter which he lias sent to/ the Borough Council relative to the' removal cf the town deck to the town hall. fb said he would be glad of the Chamber's support in the matter. Mr Norris, in his letter to the Borough Council, stated it seems to him there is one little matter that comes under the. stipulated conditions of the He tries bequest, which it is the obvious duty of the Borough Council to carry out before anything else, and that is moving the town clock to its proper place in the town hall. This dock was purchased by money raised for the purpose throughout the whole borough and it was temporarily housed in the Government buildings, pending the time when -“we .should have a building of our own to place it in.*’ When the town hall was built provision was made for the clock, but funds did not permit of ibs removal at the time; and it still remains in its temporary home. Colonel Ward moved - That the loiter be received. He pointed out that he was the originator of the proposal for the clock and got up the necessary subscriptions- If the clock were to be removed he did not know who,- could do it, as it was located in a Government building. He thought I here should be a town clock in "the town hall, hut of such a kind as would cost probably the whole of the He tries bequest. Mr ■ Murdoch seconded the motion. A move bad previously been made to remove the clock from the post office, but the Department was against the proposal. "Mr Robbins said he understood that the Public Trustee was agreeable. to the Herries bequest being expended on a town clock. Mr Murdoch said a suitable clock for the town hall would cost about £BOO. Mr Mann moved- This meeting expresses its v<*rv best thanks t<> the Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister of Public Works, for the concession granted to the travelling public using the trains into Tanranga, by providing the-‘stopping place on the Strand. This has been keenly appreciated. as it saves the. inconvenience and loss of time which going t u the main station entails. Believing in this matter we represent the settlers and general public, we would respectfully ask that the present arrangements may be continued. - In sneaking to the motion he said that the request for a station bad Veen turned down but a stopping place was a different preposition. Mr A- lb Jones seconded the nm-

lion. Mr Whiting : Does that mean tor over ? Mr Gibbercl moved an amendment to- the effect that a stopping place for incoming trains be provided on the Strand.-- Lapsed, no seconder. Mr Washer said lie was not in favour of the motion. They had asked the Minister of Public Works to permit a temporary stopping place on the Strand. He. thought the trains should run to the station and the Borough Council provida good road access, Mr Whiting referred to the request that, had been made to the Minister of Public Works for a temporary stepping place. He did not like the motion, which appeared to him like a trick. Mr Oliver said they should not move for a permanent stopping place in view cf the previous request to the Minister for a temporary stepping place. He was against the motion.

Lie objected to a 1 stopping place on the Strand and j was strongly against the motion, s Mr Murdoch spoke in support of • the motion and stressed the value if and convenience of the. stomping place on the Strand. It was a ■ great privilege, te have l the trains stopping on the' Strand and the peo.l pie who travelled bv the; train appreciated it. i Colonel Ward reviewed the position from the viewpoint of the - Railway Department. He said the i whole thing was unworkable from « the railway standpoint and they > may as well drop it. There was only one possible answer: No. He 1 would like to see the motion with- - drawm. ; Mr Green suggested, amending the motion to the effect that the temporary stopping place on the ; Strand be. continued until railway communication is established with Waihi. The mover and seconder agreed to amend the motion as indicated bv Mr Green, and the motion was altered accordingly. Mr Bateman, as representing 250 signatories and four delegates to the Hon. J. G. Coates, said he would oppose the motion and would get into touch immediately with; tire signatories with a view to taking further action. Mr Gibbercl spoke in support cf llif motion. Mr Jones contended that if a vote were taken that there would bo an overwhelming majority for the stopping place on the Strand. The Chairman said the business community and the travelling public appreciated the present stepping place. Colonel Ward said the time to have brought the proposal forward was five or six years ago. The Borough Council would have to provide a good road to the station and thne would hs sufficient enterprise for a bus to be put on between tjm station and tin- town. The sooner the stopping place was shifted the better. Mr Oliver maintained that the Chamber cf Commerce should not attempt, to force the hands cf the Minister after he had promised a temporary stopping place. Mr Mann took exception to a remark bv Mr Whiting that in bis (Mr Whiting's) opinion the motion appeared to him to be a trick. The Chairman appealed to the meeting as 1- whether Mr Whim ing should withdraw Ids remark, ■and the general reply was in thd negative.
