John Dawson, general secretary of the/ New Zealand Alliance, will regret to learn that he is at present an inmate of a private hospital in Wellington. Afr Dawson returned recently from a, visit to the Islands undertaken partly for health-re-cruiting purposes. The result was not so satisfactory as Ids friends could have desired, and, on his return, an operation was found necessary. The operation was performed on Tuesday last, and it is reported that Afr Dawson is now tirogressing satisfactorily. 'flic death at the age of 82 years of Afr W. T. Glasgow at Dunedin removes a gentleman well known, in New Zealand. Air Glasgow was formerly secretary of the Customs Department. Born in India, Afr Glasgow was educated at Belfast. He came to New Zealand in ISGI, when he at once became a clerk in the Customs Department. Ho was appointed warehouse keeper at Dunedin in 1809, and in 1871 was appointed officer in charge of the New Zealand Distillery at. that place. In 1879, Afr Glasgow was examining officer at. Invercargill, and the next year subcollector at Auckland. He was. however, appointed chief clerk of the Customs Department the same year, from nhich lie retired in 1900 on superannuation.
