Of tliis illustration the late Captain Hair wrote ; The above is the best representation (f an old-tin.e Whaka Tana or Maori war canoe. This was drawn by my friend, General Robley, at Taurargi, in 1805, and was the winning canoe in a race I got up in honour of General Robley. Tin's canoe was only about 00 feet long, with, perhaps, 00 rowers, two abreast. She was just landing on the Strand opposite Spring Street. The three kaihautu, or juglenien, were Hamiora Tu, Raniera Te Hiahia and Hohepa Te Mea.
