RAILWAY OPENING ON FRIDAY NEXT

ARRANGEMENTS WELL IN HAND.

The various ■ committees which have in hand the arrangements in connection with, the opening of the Railway into the town for regular traffic on Friday next, met in the Borough Council Chambers Inst

night to report progress, the De-puty-Mayor, Cr C, Whiting, presiding.

The Train Arrangements Committee reported that the excursion train would leave Matata on the opening day at: 8 a.m., reaching Tauranga at 10.55 a.m., and departing again at 4 o’clock. Arrangements had also been made for the ceremony when the train arrives. This ceremony will be held in the vicinity of the wharf, and will be performed by Air Macmillan, M.P.

The Official Luncheon Committee reported that the luncheon would be held at the Tauranga Hotel at 1.30. Invitations had been issued to the representatives of various local bodies, both locally and to surrounding districts, also! to representatives of the Public Works Department and others.

The Decoration Comniittlee reported thai arrangements w-ere well in hand for suitably decorating the town for the occasion.

The Entertainment Committee reported that arrangements had been made to provide- tea and coffee for the women and children at the Town Hall supper room from* 12 to 1 .'3O, where a committee of ladies will be in attendance. In the afternoon a matinee picture entertainment will be given in the Town Hall free to all. Arrangements had also been made for the attendance cf the Band at the opening ceremony. The children attending the Tauranga District High School are, it is understood, tb have a holiday, and it was resolved that it he a suggestion tie the 1 committeeis' of the schools in the surrounding districts to also give their children a holiday for the occasion.

The general committee will meet again at the borough council chambers cn Wednesday evening next at 7.30 to discuss final details.
