Mr W. Berngard has been elected to fill a vacancy on The Thames Borough Council. Mr J. IT. Sal men, S.M., who lias charge of the Thames Valiev circuit, from Thames to Putaruni, returned from a visit to Australia last week, and will resume his duties on Monday next. Mr William Taylor, the last surviving member of the original founders of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers on ihe Clyde, has just died at Avondale, at the great age of 91 years. Mr A. Hoyles, president cf the Invercargill Chamber cf Commerce, is at 1 present in Auckland. Mr Hoyles is on his way to Illinois, U.S.A., where hs will represent his chamber at the World’s Motor Transport Conference. Capain Dawson, for ten years commander cf the Ventuia, has retired. The first officer, Mr Meyer, is succeeding him. Captain Dawson has a record cf 38 years as an officer Without’ a, mishap involving less of life or ship. Messrs P, VerschafiV.t (Public Service Commissioner), A, I). Paik (Assistant Public Service Com mis sion. r), and B. L. Dullard (Puh’ic Service Inspector) are visiting Tauranga, and are staying at the Commercial Hotel. They leave for Rotorua to-men own Mr C. W. Matin sou, who has been supervisor of the mail room branch at the Chief Pest Office, Dunedin, far the past four and ahalf years, lias been promoted as ens of the supervisee of the mail branch at the Wellington General Pest Office. Captain W. D. Cameron, of the ferry steamer Wahine who has been granted a long holiday, will leave Wellington shortly on a trip to England. Captain Cameron will be accompanied by Mrs Cameron and their daughter Miss Jean Cameron. Sir Hare Id Beauchamp has left Wellington for Sydney, where h? will represent the .New Zealand branch cf the Australian Mutual Provident Society at the annual meeting of that' institution to be held on April 12. He intends returning by the Maheno to Wellington cn April 17. A Copenhagen cable says the King cf Denmark received Doctor Harold Gillies, of New Zealand, a Cambridge Blue, and thanked him for operating on the officers and men injured in the explosion of the cruiser" Geyser last summer. The King accepted a. copy of Dr Gillies’ buck, called “Plastic Surgery of the Face.” Dr Gillies is lecturing at Copenhagen on Tuesday. Captain J. Charmsn has been appointed marine superintendent for the Shaw, Sdvill and Albion Company in the' South Island. Captain Char man brought the Tainui to Now Zealand. He has commanded a number of the Shaw, Savill liners. His place in the Tainui will be taken by Captain Faulkner, the chief officer, who will be relieved at. Panama by Captain Hartman, late of the Pakeha.
