MISS EMA WALKER QUEEN OF THE CARNIVAL

SUM OF £642 i6< 6cl FOR DOMAIN IMPROVEMENTS Several weeks ago the Tauranga Hockey Association inaugurated a Queen Carnival Contest with the object of raising a substantial sum of money for the improvement of the public domain. The scheme was taken up heartily by an energetic band of workers, and four little girls were nominated as queen candidates. Socials, entertainments and stalls for the sale of goods, in order to raise money for votes, wpt? TT?i'"vi ain't held tn the town and adjacent distiicis, the enthusiasm of the workers and the liberality of the public being maintained in an excellent degree. The poll closed at 8.30 on Saturday evening and shortly after 7.30 a crowd commenced to gather at The Triangle, in order to watch the clock over Messrs Carter and Gibherd’s premises which indicated the positions of the queen candidates. As the coin came forward the positions changed rapidly, but just after eight o’clock the money literally poured in to the treasurer of the fund, and continued till 830, when the voting ceased. Then Mr C. F. J Biggs (chairman), Mr H. Gray (secretary), and other colleagues got busy counting the money and computing the additional votes. This occupied about twenty minutes and the large crowd waited expectantly for the result, which was announced from the balcony of Messrs Carter and Gibberd’s premises at 8 50 by Mr H. Gray, as follows:” Votes

Arota Queen (Miss Em? Walker) 19080 Silver Bell Queen (Miss P. Hartley)" 14960 Gate Pa Queen (Miss V. Tanner) 8/20 Maroro Queen (Miss J. Foster) 8506

The result was received with loud and prolonged cheering, T hen His Worship the Mayor, Mr B. Dive, announced that the sum raised totalled £642 163 6d. and the cheering was renewed. Mr Dive then called on Colonel G. A. Ward, chairman of the Domain Board, to address the gathering. Colonel Ward, on behalf of the Domain Board, thanked all who had worked so well in making the Queen Carnival such a splendid success. The money raised would give the people what would probably be the best playing grounds in the Bay of Plenty, He con * eluded by calling for three cheers for the promoters of the carnival, the crowd responding in a very hearty manner. Three of the queen candidates then appeared on the balcony, and each was received with vociferous cheers.

On all sides very favourable comment was made on the great success of the effort aid the handsome sum raised, which is far. in excess of the amount aimed at by the promoters. The committee and the scores of indefatigable workers who were associated with them are to be congratulated on the splendid financial results which crowned their united efforts.

The crov/ning of the queen will probably take place in the Town Hall on October 9. A meeting of all hockey players will be held in Messrs Carter and Gibberd’s premises on Thurs day evening for the purpose of arranging the f arm of entertainment in connection with the crowning ceremony.
