FIREBLIGHT MENACE.
NORTHERN CONCERN. The fear that the laxity of certain local bodies might result hi fireblight causing havoc to the farm® of tiro North, Auckland peninsula, was expressed by Mr V. 11. Red ( Bay of Islands) in the House of Representalives a few days ago. Bt. said that hawthorn had been placed in the third schedule of the Noxious Weeds Act, but a number of local' bodies had not declared hawthorn a noxious wood, and this plant was now abouo to blossom. The southern portion of the North Auckland peninsula was affected, and his present concern was tliat the blight should not' be allowed to go north. He understood the Minister for Agriculture had a Hill drafted, and he would like it known whether it was propose dto introduce it this session so that the local bodies mentioned would be compelled to declare hawthorn a noxious weed,
Tho Minister said that so far to had only a rough outline of the Bill ready, and he had submitted this to the Fruitgrower’s Association. Tiie matter was now under consideration, |>ut, ]ie, had little doubt that a Bill along tbo desired lines would be brought down.
