LABOUR’S AIM TO DEFEAT HUGHES PARTY
A USTRALIAN LA BO UK CONFERENCE BEING HELD. By i'tlejfr»Dh—Pica* aMnimum - doijinxieiiv *Z‘ti P av Sydney, June 6. Mr Charlton, leader of the Federal Labour Party, addressing the Australian Labour Party Conference, suggested with a view to strengthening the Party and regain ing prestige, the re-admission of lu mbers expelled for supporting conscription during the war. Referring to the proposals adopted at the late Brisbane InterState Conference, favouring the socialisation of industry and the formation of a supreme economic council, Mr Charlton said ho thought they were worthy of consideration, but should not be adopted as the objective of the Party. The present objective provided suitable aspirations and any change might mean disaster to the Party. He added that if Labour pulled together or at the Federal elections the defeat of the Hughes Administration was certain. The objective began with the moving of a motion providing against the acceptance of the Brisbane Conference’s decision and referring back the whole question of the Party objective to a speciallycalled inter-State Conference. The debate promises to provide important developments.
