WAIKATO MARKET REPORT

The Farmers’ Co-operative Auctioneering Company, Ltd., report under date April 24 Beef —There is a slight improvement in the demand for beef, although values have not appreciably advanced. Home reports do not justify any optimism in the export branch, but it is fairly certain that local values will harden before long. Mutton--Is advancing rapidly and good prospects are assured. Supplies have not been shorter at this period for a number of years. Fai lambs are offering in small lots only. Store Cattle Grown cattle are quite as dull as ever and until beef improves, may bo expected to so continue. There has been a strong enquiry for 20 month steers from southern districts, and all cattle of this class with any degree of quality have sold freely’, values in many cases reaching the standard of older cattle. Heifers in calf are also the subject of strong enquiry and the improvement will no doubt tempt cattle of this class on the market. Calves of both sex are inclined to fluctuate, but well reared animals generally meet with good competition.

Store Sheep- The market, for all classes is exceedingly firm. There seems no possibility- of satisfying the present demand, especially foxwethers. Ewes in lamb are also being freely enquired after, but few saleable linos are offering. According to report, lamb will be high in favour when next season comes round.

Pigs - Good sales are reported from all centres. According to weight sheets values for fat pigs work out at about 5 3-4 d to 6d per lb. Young pigs at most sales meet with good competition, Horses—No improvement can be recorded generally, although a few good sales have been effected privately.
