The upper stories, housing subordinate officials, were cut off Several families perished. The fire brigade was powerless. It was feared that the conflagra tion would spread to the ground floor, where the munitions for the African army were stored. The death roll is between fifty and sixty. A number lost their lives by jumping from the windows. The fire is still burning,
