Bay of Plenty Times TUESDAY, August 16th, 1921. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

We regret to record the death of Mr John Douglas, which occurred at Te Puke yesterday. Deceased who was in his 79th. year, was born in Ayr, Scotland. He had resided in Opotiki, Tauranga, anclTe Puke for over forty years, and for the greater part of that period had assisted the late Mr J. H. Fenton in his business and farming operations in Tauranga and Te Puke. The late Mr Douglas was unmarried.

The steamer Ngatiawa is due to call in here at seven o’clock to-morrow morning on her way from Auckland to Ohiwa and Opotiki. Mr H. Cairns notifies that he is now controlling the business of Cairns and Long, land and estate agents.

A meeting of owners of allotments in the Tauranga Cemetery will be held at 3.30 p.m. tomorrow at the office of the Harbour Board, for the purpose of electing five trustees for the period ending September 15, 1928. The borough rate book for the year ending March 31, 1922, is now open for inspection at the Borough Council office. At Oropi plum tress in sheltered orchards are in blossom. In the bush clearings the grass shows great growth for this time of year, and stock are looking wonderfully well. Contributions of spring flowers especially violets, are asked for the Church of England Violet and Spring flower afternoon in the Parish Hall on Thursday next, commencing at 2.30. There are to be competitions for decorated tables and decorated mantelpieces, also for homemade bread, sponge sandwich, sweet scones, plain scones, madiera cake, and I doz heaviest hen eggs. Entries will be received at the Vicarage, ’phone 106. Surveyors are at present operating in the Waimana Gorge defining the route of tne East Coast railway from Taneatua to Waimana. The lease of the Mount Maunganui domain, for a period of three years, was offered by auction at the Mart on Saturday afternoon, and was secured by Mr J. Kimber at £96 per annum.

Attention is directed to an important sale of cattle to be held at Ngongotaha on Thursday next by the Farmers’ Co operative Auctioneering Company. The entries include 100 2-yr-old steers (Waikato line) 100 liyr old steers, and over 100 dairy cows and heifers. The firm will hold their next sale at Tauranga, on Friday 26th. inst.

The members of theTauranga Choral Society are reminded of the practice to night at 7,30 in the Church of England Parish Hall. A full attendance is requested as the Society has agreed to assist at the concert to be held at an early date by the Municipal Band. At a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Gisborne on Thursday last, before Mr Day S. M., a Tau ranga resident was charged with the theft of an overcoat from a country settler at Ruatorea. Mr F. W. Shortland, for the defence, called several witnesses from Tauranga, who testified that the coat never belonged to the informant, and was a gift to the accused’s brother. Mr Shortland told the Bench that the accused would not be content with a Scotch verdict and asked for an acquittal without a slain on accused’s character. The Magistrate said the case must be dismissed as it had been proved that the coat was the one given as a gift to accused’s brother. Got wet through! Wore damp boots! The Tauranga Rugby Union received word yesterday asking D. Borell to proceed to Hamilton in order to play in the Bay of Plenty team against Waikato Hamilton to-morrow. Tu Tangitu left for Rotorua yesterday,Witana Murray left this morning. The fourth player from Tauranga, G. lies, proceeds to Hamilton tomorrow morning. All the abovenamed players have been selected to play against the Springboks at Rotorua on the 24th inst. so that the Tauranga Rugby Union will be well represented in the game.

A special meeting ol the Otumoetai branch of the Farmers’ Union will be held in the school at 7.30 on Thursday evening when the rural delivery business will be discussed.

A London message says the Government has raised the price of butter by 5s all round, making the price of first-grade New Zealand 262 s and A ustralian 2455. A Press Association message from Rotorua says the New South Wales Rugby team easily defeated the Bay of Plenty fifteen yesterday by 29 points to 3. The weather was fine and the ground fairly dry. The attendance was about 1000. The visitors’ cleverness and combination were altogether too much for the Bay of Plenty team, who only scored a goal from a free kick in the first spell and were utterly overwhelmed in the second spell, His Worship the Mayor, Mr B. Live, invites the public to attend a meeting in the Town Hall on Friday cvening*to consider the holding of a fitting reception to Sir Wm. Herries on his return from the Old Country. Cr. Lochhead raised the questi n, at Friday’s meeting of the County Council, of interest on the debit balance of the general account and thought each Riding should be charged its share of the interest. At the request of the chairman, Cr. Lochhead agreed to defer ®the matter till next meeting.

The “Grotesques” the local party of entertainers, go to Te Puke to-night to give a concert there. They are also now engaged in rehearsing for a variety concert to be held shortly to assist in raising funds for the purchase of a new boat for the rowing club. The Tauranga Rugby Union has now on sale a limited number of tickets for admission to the grandstand and ground at Rotorua on Wednesday, 24th, inst., on the occasion of the Bay ofPlentybpringboks match. The price of each ticket is five shlilings. The tickets are now obtainable from Mr C, F. Oliver, and cannot be purchased after Friday next. Messrs M. Walker and C C. Norris, J. P.’s„ presided at a silting of the court yesterday when J, Srown, J. Ririnui, J. Pomako, and T. Brown were each arraigned on charges of drunkenness. Fines of £1 and £1 4s 6d were imposed in each case, and prohibition orders were also issued against Pomako and T. Brown. The annual meeting of members of the Bay of Plenty Jockey Club will be held in the Borough Council Chambers on Monday, August 22, at 7.30 p.m*. and not on Thursday next as previously advertised.
