BOOKMAKERS’ CLERKS
STATE SERVANTS DETECTED
In a report to the public service , commissioner, Detective J. Brophy, of the Criminal Investigation Branch, tu Melbourne, has submitted the names of about 14 officers iu (he State service, whom lie had seen acting as bookmakers' clerks at recent race meetings. An inquiry will bo held.
Detective Brophy had been directed to make inquiries, in consequence of allegations that certain clerks, who had either obtained leave for recreation*purposes or were absent without leave, had been working at the races. The officers mentioned by D: toctive Brophy have been written to by the commissioner, and asked for an explanation. An officer of the Law Department, who had been detected a( the races, has forwarded'his resignation, which -has been accepted.
