Bay of Plenty Times TUESDAY, JULY 12th 1921. CITRUS FRUIT GROWING.
One of ihe most important proposals along practical lines for the welfare of the Tauranga district is contained in the-letter appearing in this issue from Lieut.-Colonel Mayfield as President of the Tailranga Fruitgrowers’ Association. Out of a ripe experience he advocates the taking up of citrus fruit growing along practical lines - those upon which other industries have proved eminently successful. The growing oL stone fruit has * long since proved to he wholly unprofitable, and now with the dreaded lire blight making pip fruit growing if not altogether a failure so doubtful that no advocate could be found to urge its prosecution, the inevitable conclusion has to bo faced that the district should be made to produce what nature has eminently suited it for the growing of citrus 'fruits. Lieut.-Colonel Mayfield has painted a glowing picture of what the district could be transformed into. In no sense is it over-drawn, and the sound, practical suggestions contained in Lie letter must command moiu than passing attention, and should give such an impetus to the growing of citrus fruits:, that the formal ion of a co-operative society, having for its object the fostering and development of such an industry, should be an immediate probability. As will be seen the primary object of the letter is to secure <v representative and chi hnsiatstic attendance at the meeting on the 26th inst. With (lie position of fruitgrowing here so plainly and forcibly put, there is lit tie doubt that not only orchardists, but all who are ill' die slightest ejegte-e interested in the development of the district, will make a point of aitending.
