Giving evidence before the Arbitration Court on the claims of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers, counsel for the Broken Hill Proprietary stated that ow ing to competition from Belgium, and elsewhere, and the unsettled state of the labour market, the company probably would be compelled to dismiss 1,000 employees from its steel works.
