CATTLE TICK AND ITS CONTROL
In a 'recent issue the Journal of Agriculture devoted its attention to the important matter of the cattle tick. According to the Director of the Live stock Division, the cattle tick was first observed in the north Auckland district'.' where lue mode of its introduction is obscure. This locality being extremely favourable for it? development it readily increased, with the resultthat it has now spread over a h.rge area. A Nine drawn from the Manukan to Mercury Hay would leave the part to the north as what may be described as ticksiufesicil country. From the southward to a line from Kawhia to Opotiki would indcale where the ticks lu.ve been found in very isolated eases. Within the last few years the spread of the pest has been very marked and the risk existed that unless checked it would over-nut tlm whole of the North Island. It n satisfactory, however, to note that the settlers in the inlested district? have shown a keen deshv lor its suppression and have organise.,! themselves into administrative committees with this object in view, their efforts in ibis direct ion 'wingwell supported by the stock-owner? of clean districts. This organised co-operation is a valuable, aid to tne Department in administering tin' regulations now- in force. In connection with this subject local settlers will be pleased to learn that the County Council has been alive to its responsibilities, and is cooperating with the stock inspector. At the present time the tick is practically confued to ylairy cattle but in view of the probability of travelling mobs the question of the erection of a dip naturally suggest? itself. In respect to this the council is quite willing to take immediate action whenever the slock inspector gives the word.-- Opotiki Herald.
