PUKEKAWA TRAGEDY
Man Arrested on Charge of Murder
Auckland, Sept 13
A farm labourer, named Samuel John Thorn, was arrested at Tuakau on Saturday on a charge of murdering Sydney Seymour Eyre at Pukek-iwa on the night of August 24. Thorn was brought to Auckland on Saturday night and appears at the Court this morning. The arrested man is thirtythree years of age, married, but has been living apart for some time from his wife and six children. While Eyre was on active service for two years Thorn managed the farm for Mrs Eyre. After Eyre's return Thorn went to work at Glenmurray, eighteen miles away, but paid three visits to Eyre's homestead. A doublebarrelled gun and some ammunition were found in Thorn's whare.
It is understood that the authorities are satisfied that only one shot was fired, a special kind of cartridge being used.
It is believed that the motive was, not robbery.
