The Treasury Department has advised the Tauranga County I Council of the payment of £128 7s 6d, gold duty brought to credit during the month of April. The State Advances Office, Wellington, has advised the Tauranga County Council tlyit the Council's application for a loan of £5,000 for the purpose of reconstructing bridges, has received the provisional approval by the Board of the Office. Upon completion of certain documents the application will again be placed before the Board for final consideration.—The Council decided on Friday to levy a rate of Id in the £1 over the whole county as security for the loan, which is requiredior the reinstatement of the Hairini and Waitckohc bridges. The Public Library Committee has decided, owing to inefficient lighting, to close the reading room at five o'clock in future. A meeting of the Tauranga Orchestral Society will be held in the Wesley Hall to-night at 7.30. Any persons, who desire to join the Society are asked to be present. The East Coast Shipping Company's vessel Isabella deFraine arrived from Auckland yesterday morning with general cargo for Tauranga and the Mount. She is due to sail for Auckland to-night, and leaves again for Tauranga on Saturday. A meeting, convened by Mr C. b. Macmillan, will be held in the Coronation Hall to-morrow night at 8 o'clock to consider the question of adopting the system of rating on the unimproved value in this Borough. The Mayor will preside. The ketch Torea arrived from Tarawera Outlet on Monday. As the crew are indisoosed with severe colds the vessel will not be able to resume running for some clays. Mr B. C.
