CALIFORNIA OBJECTS TO JAP IMMIGRANTS

Serious Trouble Looming Between United States and Japan.

Auslraliau and N.Z. Cable Association

Rec July [4, 10 a.m. New York, July 12 The New York Globe's (ravelling correspondent, Bruce Blivan, telegraphs from LO3 Angelos, that serious trouble is ioQming between the United States and Japan. Local ami - Japanese i sentiment in California is rapidly rising to a point where action may soon betaken which will make a continuance of the present cordial relations between the two countries impossible. California already has a law forbidding any Japanese to own land, and she is about to pass another forbidding Japanese to land. Still more menacing in the writer's opinion is the possibility of riots by the Californians against the Japanese. The outstanding aspect of Califo'rnian situation is the fear that the Japanese, due to their ability to work harder than the

white man on a lower scale of living, will secure the ultimate

control of every industry they enter. The law forbiddingJapanese to own land is a dead letter. Dummy corporations are formed, with white men as nominal directors, to hold land actually owned by Japanese. The -anti-Japanese movement in California is furthered by the small white landowners The large ranch owners arc glad to employ Japanese workers. The Califor nians claim that the practice of 'picture brides' continues, despite the assurance of Japan that it would cease. The Japanese birthrate is so great that the Californians claim that the Japanese would soon control the State. *
