B} ilu- combination of the Nationalist and Labour parties the Smuts' Ministry narrowly escaped defeat on the cost of living question, the voting being 54 to 52. Before the division General Smuts annealed to Labour not to be misled by'the Marhiavclian moves of the Her'zoL;ites and forsake the Government. The division is the first real test of the opposing parties' strength.
