Beautiful weather prevailed for the athletic sports meeting held on the Tauranga Domain on Easter Monday under the auspices of the Western Bay of Plenty Returned Soldiers Association and Tauranga Volunteer Fire Brigade. About a thousand people were present, the assemblage including a large number of visitors from the Te Puke district. The foot races were keenly congested, and in several instances large fields faced the starter. The pillow fights were productive of great merriment, while the bran clip enabled MrLen Norris to act as a public benefactor and at the same time to assist the object of the gathering. The sheaf tossing was a popular event, victory going to Mr G. Gardiner. The fencing off of the athletic area was in the interests of the public and competitors alike, and might with advantage be adopted at all future gatherings of a similar nature. Light refreshments were dispensed on the ground, the booth being well patronised. The rising generation were well catered for by means of foot races and lolly scrambles. The Te Puke Brass Band, conducted by Bandmaster F. Woods, was present, and by their artistic rendering of a well-selected programme earned the encomiums of their auditors.
