Electors of the Maketu and Te

Puke Ridings and ie Puke Town District are reminded of the election to take place this month for the return of two members to represent the combined districtsnamed on the Tauranga Harbour Board. The sitting members are Messrs C. Lally and Donald Grant, and it is understood that both are seeking re-election Mr Robert King, thre Chairman of the Board, is one of the Government nominees.

The schools athletic championships are to be held at Te Puke on April 8, when competitors lrom all the surrounding schools will participate. An enjoyable day's sport is assured for young and old.

A commencement with maize picking has been made in a few early paddocks, but gathering generally will not be in full swing for some weeks yet. It is reported that the Maoris are asking good prices for their work in the maizefields this season-

There is a movement on foot to hold an athletic sports me iting at Paengaroa next month.

The nevv train service, as instituted by the Public ' Works Department on Thursday last, is meeting with the approval of settlers and the travelling public.

Followers of football are looking forward to strong competition in the Rugby Union championship. Mr Hookey, the new secretary, is a keen sport, and should make an q^le director. The autumn 'horse sales are approaching. To-morrow the Farmers' Auctioneering Company will hold a horse fair in their Te Puke yards. On Wednesday and Thursday, April 14 and 15, the Loan and Mercantile Company will conduct a horse sale at Te Puke, and on April 12 the latter Company will hold a horse fair at Whakatane.

The Paengaroa School furnishes evidence of the progress of that district. There are now three teachers on the staff, the Education Board having just appointed Miss V. Lemon to the staff.

A young thoroughbred from Mr Mitchell's Rangiuru property has gone into one of the leading racing stables in Auckland. It is a descendant of that well-known Performer Mon Ami.

_ The annual picnic in connection with the Paengaroa Junction school will take place in Mr G. B. Sutton's paddock to-morrow.

While a party of five was motoring to Te Puke on Saturday morning the car left the rjad near Mr Duncan's house and capsized over a bank. One of the occupants sustained a, broken collarbone, and no time was lost in summoning Dr. MacFarlane, who proceeded immediately to the scene of the accident and attended to the injury. The other members, of the party, including two Tauranga residents, escaped with bruises.

Mr D. Grant, of Paengaroa, has returned from a holiday trip to Auckland-

Several Te Puke runners competed at the Tauranga sports on Monday,- and were successful in in several events. G. Gardiner, the*well-known Rugby player, was the most successful athlete at the gathering.
