RAILWAY ACCIDENT.

An accident occurred at the Te Puke Railway (Station o'a Friday evening last, which, but for the promptitude of the engico driver and fireman would have had severe resu'fs,

An engine comio{> in from O'atnnrakau was placed in the engine ehed and through, an oversight on the part of a member of the train crew, the points from tho main lino to ihe engiue shed siding w v ere left opeD, Tho consequence wns that wVien tho train from the Mount, which leaves Te Puke for Paengarcu at 5 50pm., reached the pr>intß she -ran into tho engine shed sidin •, The driver immediately realised th.nt he was on the wrong iiuo and applied the brakes, but the lines being unfortunately greasy, the brakes failed t> hold, and the train skidded in-to the engine shed driving an ongiuc which was stand ng in it through the far end door and on to a bank beyond. Both engines had their buffers and cow(atctier3 broken. The standupr engine was also considerably knocked abut otherwise. There were a considerable number of passengers en the train but none sustained any injuries.

The engine driver, iireman and guard coDvierned in tho points being left open, have bom suspended, pending an official inquiry wh.ich;wiil be held by Mr Hannah at his office to-morrow.
