ORDINARY MEETING.

The arditmy meeting of ths Borough Council WB3 field last night,the Mayor (Mr «!. C. Adams) presiding). Crs Robbing Ashtan, Crump, Macmillan, Pemberton and Tanner also attended Mr J. H. Town Clerk's letter of Ih* 16th i'nst., asking if it wculi not bo possible tn start railway works from Tauraapa westwards. I regret to aay th'jt under present circumstancsa it is quite impassible, especially as 510 money has been voted for that purpose en tlie ! estimates." The letter to which this was a reply was written by the Town Cl=rk on the 16th-inst. and stated "At a meeting of my Council held on the 14th ins:. I ? was directed to write and ask you ;wbether it would not be possible to tf;e railway works started frcrn westwards My Council 'feels that the time has atrived when fa start could be made at this ene, and ■-•should you desire is prepared to assist in finding Lieu to cuulik1 tun work to "he commenced." Cr Robbins expressed surprise? at the Minister's rsply.. He understood that a vote had been placed on the last estimates for railway work between, Wairoa and To Mi»u:;na junction, and as practically ncne of this had been spent it was difficult to understand why the work could not go or. if the men were found. Cr Tanner was nho surprised at the reply. He moved that the the Council write again to the Minister pointing out that the Cjuticil understood the position to be as indicated by Cr Robbina. Me understood that the work wa3 to be started some two years ago, and now the Council wa9 told that there was tic nionty for ths work. Cr Robbins seconded the motion. He did not think the Council should let the matter drop without making an effort to have tho work started. Cr Maeinillan was also undsr the impression that money hud been voted for the portion between Wairca and the Junction, and ha took it that while the authority existed the spending of the money was not limited to any particulur portion of the line. The motion waa ccrried. Cr Macmillan then moved that a copy of the correpsor,denc« be sent to I the Hon. W. H. Herries, in order I thaf, if «o money were available for 1 the section from lauranga westwards Ihe might take steps to see that a i grant was made for that portion at the earliest possible opportunity. Seconded by Cr Tanner and carried. New Hospital District.

; The Secretary cf the Bay of Plenty Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote advisiiig the constitution of the new Tauraiigu and Bay of Plenty Hospital districts a?>d suggeuing that the first elections of members he held on March 7th. •

It was resolved on the motion of Cr Robbing, seconded by Cr Macmillan, that it be suggested to tha Secretary that the elections fee held on March 12th as a more convenient date.

Nightwatchman. Ihe Secretary, of the Taurangi .Tradesmen's Asaocißtion wrote asking the Council ta irerease its contribution to the nightwatctnnan's salary from 5s to 10s "per month. It was pointed cut that the salary he was hosv receiving was a small one, an:' as it was desirable ta retain fcis services it must be increased. It vas resolved on the motion cf Cr RotibilTs, seconded by the Mayor, that the contribution be increased as desired, it being understood that tradesmen were also bei«ig asked to increase their contribution eligbtly. Librarian. Mr W. K. Turner wralo regarding the position of librarian held by his late daughter, and uskir.e; tiiot he be relieved of the duties—which bo been carrying on —as booh after the olst inst. as possble. He also thankc I tbe Council and the Library Committee on behalf of bimsel/? and Mrs Turner for the consideration and kindness shown to hi 9 late daughter while she held the position.

It was resolved on the motion of Cr Macmillan, seconded by Cr Robbing that applications be invited for the position at the same salary and an the same conditions as at present, returnable oti February Bth, and that the Library Committee of the Council and of the eubicribers .be authorised In deol with tbe applications.

Tail Lights

The Borough Inspector reported that there was no prevision iv tbe by-laws tc take proceedings for (1) Allowing a car to stand o:i (he streets at night without having lights n front and rear and (2) for travelling "Without a tail light.

The matter was left in the hands of the Mayer asd Town Clerk to luok hito the poaitiun a'>;j report to the next meeting of the Cnncil,
